My, but time flies! Seems like the summer barely began, and it finished. I guess it's just the effect of a full schedule and wishful thinking. Actually, summer weather extended almost an extra month, so that fall weather has only just begun.
What happened this summer? Well, besides our day jobs, we stayed home and gardened much of the time. The garden was very productive, both of veggies and of weeds (where we didn't mulch). We're still harvesting even now. Would you believe we haven't had a frost yet, so the basil and parsley and lettuce and peppers are still growing?
I took most of my super chilies and Thai peppers and made another half gallon of my New Hampshire Hot hot sauce. I'll have to make my food extra-spicy if I'm going to use that up by this time next year. Maybe I'll give some away, or blend it into a fruit sauce as a chicken and fish marinade.
Karen filled half the freezer with her world-famous pesto, and I dried a whole lot more basil.
We have a five-gallon bucket full of our potatoes sitting in our kitchen right now, and there's about that much again waiting to be harvested.
The summer squash, eggplant and tomato harvest peaked in early September while we were in Denmark. We had a great trip visiting Stefan and his family, birding, visiting castles, and sightseeing. Worked up a real tan in that relentless Danish sun. Came home with souvenir herring and smoked mackerel and cheese and rye bread. Mmmmm!
So now it's time for fall chores -- chopping wood, raking leaves, clearing the garden, putting up the storm windows, getting out the fuzzy clothes. We're warm, safe, and well-fed, and we hope you are, too.
Peace,
Terry
