Five-spice Tofu


Adapted from recipe from Sundays at Moosewood Restaurant

  • 24 oz. extra-firm tofu
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 2 "stars" of star anise
  • 1 teaspoon molasses

Slice each cake of tofu in half horizontally, then cut slices so that you have 6 equal pieces.

Combine soy sauce, water, five-spice powder, star anise, and molasses in a large sauté pan. Bring to a boil. Add tofu in a single layer, reduce heat, and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes, turning tofu once.

Marinate covered for 3 hours or overnight, turning 2 or 3 times. Drain before storing. Will keep in refrigerator for a week.
