HOT HOT HOT!

No, I'm not just describing my pepper sauce, it's the weather. Highs in the 90's, lows around 70. I might as well be in Texas. Everyone is dragged out, sweaty, and short-tempered. Like I say, might as well be in Texas.

You'll see evidence of my latest toy on the website. A week ago today I got a digital camera, and last weekend I went out and took a bunch of photos. I put three of them on the site today, and I like it! I'll have to figure out the sizing and presentation a little more carefully, but you can expect more and better pictures in the future.

Karen and I have begun a biodiversity survey of our property. At least that's what we call it. We are going out and trying to identify every plant and animal and bug we come across. At the very least we're learning to identify all the weeds! If only there were better field guides available for bugs. The list will probably appear on the website once we get it organized.

We've added dragonflies to our list of nature passions. I got a picture of the first one we've identified in the yard, a Yellow-legged Meadowhawk. It appears to be an immature one.

The vegetable garden is going well this year, although the dryness and heat has taken its toll on some of the cool season crops. The big successes so far have been the bok choy, green beans, and beets. The leeks and onions, eggplants and peppers are all going to have big crops, too (check out the picture of the eggplant). It seems like some critter is burrowing under the zucchini and chomping the roots, so that is not doing so well.

Karen has the perennial bed whipped into shape. She's ready to plant more, so maybe I'll have less grass (weeds) to mow in the future.

If I get around to it, I'll put a new recipe on the website, maybe with pictures!

I hope all is well with you! Keep cool!
