Nicole Yunger Halpern ’11 is a Modified Physics major and will present her “Once Upon a Time in Linear Algebra: Blending Words and Numbers.”

Nicole Yunger Halpern ’11 identifies as an interdisciplinarian the way other people identify as Presbyterians and Zoroastrians. Her major, Modified Physics, includes philosophy, history, math, astronomy…and a bit of physics. Nicole enjoys participating in science and math in off-the-wall ways. During Spring 2009, she interned at the Smithsonian’s Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology. The previous fall, she brought Randall Munroe, creator of the math/science webcomic xkcd, to Dartmouth. For her Presidential Scholarship, Nicole helped physicist Marcelo Gleiser edit the books he writes for non-scientists. Nicole writes, too: She blogs for the Tampa Tribune, for which she used to write an approximately monthly humor column. Three of her poems will appear in the College Mathematics Journal this May. A public speaking addict, Nicole co-leads Rocky VoxMasters, Dartmouth’s public speaking group. TEDxDartmouth will likely worsen the addiction, but she doesn’t care.
