The Green Greeks Program has roots dating back over a decade and was formalized in the fall of 2006 with the goal of making campus fraternities, sororities, and coeducational social houses more sustainable. The Greeks Sustainability Intern is based in the Office of Residential Life and collaborates with the Sustainability Initiative and the students of Sustainable Dartmouth to develop and implement environmental programs with Greek organizations.
The focus of the Green Greeks Program is on empowering Greek houses to take action on their own, with the support of the Office of Residential Life and the Sustainability Initiative. There is a Sustainability Coordinator in each house to spearhead conservation projects. Each house is given room to be creative with their sustainability initiatives, but the Sustainability Coordinators' duties usually include organizing recycling and composting, reducing energy consumption, and increasing general awareness among their peers.
