Dartmouth College takes great pride in the diversity of our student body and staff. Living and studying together in Hanover New Hampshire, each day is an opportunity to learn about what unites us and how we are different from each other.
Student Life supports student involvement in learning about living in a diverse world. We encourage experimentation and risk-taking through participation and broad involvement. Throughout, the phrase, all are welcome is paramount. One student’s remark about the student-run Chinese Dance Troupe gives an important look at our perspective on involvement. She said, “To be in the Chinese Dance Troupe you don’t have to be Chinese, and you don’t have to know how to dance. You just have to be willing to give it a try.”
Cultural competency, a knowledge of self and others and general confidence in working with a diverse group of people is a key skill emphasized in Student Life. Alumni who were involved with Student Life organizations report that the cultural competency they developed through work in student organizations is key to their success after College, both personally and professionally.
We also have several affinity houses, including the Cutter-Shabazz Academic Affinity-House, the Latin American, Latino and Caribbean Studies House (LALACS House), the Native American Cultural House and the Asian Studies Center; a Center for Women and Gender, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Ally (LGBTQA) Resource Center and numerous annual signature programs to provide cultural "anchors" for our historically under-represented students and outreach programs that educate and nurture allies in our community.
Dartmouth’s culture specific student organizations reflect student interest in many cultures through activities based variously on politics, performing arts, the media, language, or race and ethnicity. The student-run Council on Student Organizations recognizes and funds the following culture specific student organization.
