The Stonefence Review is a Dartmouth College literary and art magazine that has been in publication since 1980.
We publish art and creative writing--fiction, non-fiction, poetry. All copies of the issues are free; we are
a student-run organization sponsored by COSO and occasional grants (the Hewlitt Grant, for the last several years).
We welcome any donations.
How often does Stonefence publish?
At least twice a year, usually at the end of fall and spring terms, but more often as funds and material
allow. We hope to begin publishing every term (3-4 times a year).
What kind of submissions does Stonefence publish? How are the submissions judged?
Stonefence is looking for pieces that display quality and originality. There are no official guidelines.
Artwork, poetry, and prose are selected by majority vote. Pieces are chosen for aesthetic,
and not ideological, merit.
Stonefence Writing Editors discuss each submitted piece in a workshop setting; all pieces are evaluated
anonymously, though the Editor-in-Chief may meet the authors if they request critique and feedback.
Art Editors may work more closely with artists to choose pieces that best represent their work within
the limits of magazine print.
Who can get published in Stonefence?
Dartmouth undergraduate and graduate students as well as alumni/ae, faculty, staff, and members
of the Dartmouth community.
How do I submit?
You can submit in several ways: via our submissions page, email (in plaintext or Microsoft Word enclosures),
post, or arrange to hand the artwork to one of the editors personally. More than one submission per person is
encouraged.
Can I get feedback on my work?
Yes. If you request feedback, we will be sure to record our comments on the piece(s). An editor will be
assigned to work with you, probably the Editor-in-Chief. All comments are to be regarded as editors' personal opinions
from experience with writing or art, therefore subjective but informed opinions.
How can I become part of the Editorial Board?
Email the account with your request, or fill out the on-line application. We are interested in editors who show some
talent in editing. Experience is a plus but not necessary.
What would I do as an Editor? What kind of committment would I be making?
The Editorial Boards are split into three sections: Prose, Poetry, and Art. Each section has a review
board of several student editors, and is headed by an Editor, usually an upperclassman.
We meet once a week, most weeks of the term, for an hour. Section Editors may cancel if there are not enough
submissions to be discussed. During the middle and end of a term, much of the meetings are final rounds of pieces,
layout decisions, scanning, and any other small projects we may need for the issue. Everyone has an opportunity to learn
PhotoShop and PageMaker, and decide how the issue will look.
Can I attend a meeting?
There will be one open meeting held at the beginning of each term. You are welcome to join us!
What else does Stonefence do?
We recently started a reading series, in which we do at least one on-campus reading a term, and several off-campus
readings. Off campus locations include Kendall and Harvest Hill retirement homes, Outreach House, and the Dartmouth
Hitchcock Medical Center. Details of these readings will be posted on our Events page and our Bulletin.
What other literary opportunities are there on campus?
There are several other fabulous literary publications at Dartmouth. Short descriptions and links are given below.
