The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory Users Organization (SSRLUO) represents the scientists and students that conduct research at the SSRL facility. This diverse group represents those conducting hard X-ray, vacuum ultraviolet, and crystallography beamlines. We serve to facilitate communication between the SSRL management and users, to promote the research mission of SSRL and its users, and to assist in communicating the need for synchrotron research to federal funding agencies and representatives. Input from users is vital to the success of these goals; we urge the involvement of all scientists affiliated with research at SSRL. In order to obtain input from users, and to showcase the scientific achievements of SSRL users, we also organize and annual SSRL User's Meeting, and award the Lytle Award to an individual who has contributed to the success of SSRL. The Users' Meeting is held every fall, and features presentations and a poster session from a variety of users and prominent scientists covering a range of research conducted at SSRL and elsewhere. Your attendance is encouraged. |
SSRL has recently been asked to implement a series of changes to their user access policy to better ensure the safety and security of the site. These changes may well impact you, including the following changes: (1) Prenotification of intent to travel to synchrotron. (2) Additional security screening for some visitors. Additionally, synchrotron use during the upcoming run schedule will require GERT radiation training and dosimeters will be issued for all users on the experimental floor. The SSRL staff and the User Organization are working together to help minimize the impact of these changes to users' schedules. More information is available regarding these changes at SSRL and the APS. Other News User Proposals: Deadlines are November 1 (X-ray/VUV) and Dec 1 (Crystallography). Writing letters to your Congressperson is a VERY important and effective way of helping further the cause of science and funding for science. Below are lists of the House and Senate Appropriations committee members for Energy & Water, some with a list of major universities within their districts. These committees are meeting in the end of May to appropriate the FY04 budget. Feel free to use the templates provided, or, better, write your own letters.
Visiting your Representative in the House or your Senator is even better, especially when they are in their home office. If you would like help visiting your elected officials and you are an SSRL user, please contact Jane DeWitt from the SSRLUOEC. The following links are handouts provided by the Chairs of the DOE Light Source User Organizations at recent meetings with government officials in Washington, D.C.
