Landis Named Women's Soccer Coach At Dartmouth
HANOVER, N.H. -- Ben Landis, assistant women's soccer coach at Dartmouth College for the past three years, has been promoted to head women's soccer coach, according to an announcement by Director of Athletics Josie Harper.
Landis, who joined the Big Green in 2000, replaces Erica Walsh, who resigned in December to pursue educational opportunities.
"It's a terrific challenge," said Landis. "The support I've received from the administration and other coaches here has been great. It's exciting to step into an environment that's been so successful through the years, and now I get to put my stamp on it."
Landis inherits a program that's been to the NCAA Tournament eight times -- including five straight appearances --and won five Ivy titles.
"We graduate a terrific class this June and will miss them, but we have a great core returning this fall," said Landis. "The immediate challenge for us will be to compete for the Ivy League title again and vie for a bid to the NCAA Tournament. To be able to do those things on a consistent basis are the goals of this program and I'm thrilled to lead this dynamic group of young women in pursuit of those goals."
An assistant coach at Lehigh University from 1997-99, Landis also served in that capacity at Bucknell University from 1994-1997.
A 1996 graduate of Bucknell, Landis majored in mathematics and minored in education. He earned an MBA from Lehigh in 2000 where he concentrated in management.
Landis hails from Breinigsville, Pa., where he played club ball for the Parkland Soccer Club. He has two NSCAA coaching licenses, a National Diploma and an Advanced National Diploma.
"It's my belief that the program has flourished under coaches who
have a passion and knowledge of the game, and care about our student-athletes,"
said Harper. "They encourage them to be the best on the soccer field
and in the classroom, and it's my belief that Ben embraces these qualities."

WALSH RESIGNS POST AS DARTMOUTH WOMEN'S SOCCER COACH
HANOVER, N.H. -- Dartmouth College women's soccer head coach Erica Walsh announced her resignation on Wednesday to pursue educational opportunities at another university.
"Without question, I am leaving Dartmouth with mixed emotions," Walsh said. "My five years with the program have been tremendous and I feel that several great years are in store for Dartmouth in the future. However, I'm looking forward to moving on with my career and continuing with my education."
Under her guidance, Dartmouth took its regional success to another level as a national powerhouse. Walsh recently capped her third season at the helm of the Big Green program by leading Dartmouth to its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament.
"I'm disappointed for women's soccer and Dartmouth women's soccer in particular," said Josie Harper, Dartmouth's Director of Athletics. "I feel that Erica Walsh is one of the finest women's soccer coaches in the country as both a tactician and role model for our young women."
In three seasons, Walsh compiled a 37-15-2 record, with her winning percentage of .703 the highest in school history and her sum of 37 wins the second-best mark. As dominant as any team in the Ivy League the last three years, the Big Green won consecutive conference titles in 2000 and 2001. Walsh's winning percentage of .815 in Ivy League play is the highest in Dartmouth history, while her 16 wins are the second-most.
A consistent member of the top 25 rankings under Walsh, Dartmouth won three NCAA tournament contests with the Big Green reaching the Sweet 16 round twice in three seasons, most recently in 2001.
Under her tutelage, seven Dartmouth players made the Northeast Region squad, while seven earned first team All-Ivy honors, seven were named second team All-Ivy and one took home the Ivy League player of the year award.
Walsh served as an assistant for the Big Green under Kelly Knudsen for two seasons prior to being named the seventh coach in school history. As an assistant, Walsh helped lead Dartmouth to a pair of NCAA tournament berths, including a run to the quarterfinals in 1998.
Walsh's resignation is effective Jan. 10, 2003, after which she plans to pursue her master's degree in business administration.
