2002-03 Dartmouth Women's Golf Outlook It's an experienced Dartmouth women's golf team that will take to the links as six letterwinners return for the 2002-03 campaign. The Big Green's top returnee is junior Shannon Rogers (Center Barnstead, N.H.) who has been the squad's most valuable player for two straight years. Rogers had an impressive fourth place finish at the Mt. Holyoke Invitational last fall, and she opened the ECAC Championship with a solid 77. Senior Vivian Lee (Bloomington, Minn.), back for her final year of varsity competition, has steadily become more consistent and scoring lower for Dartmouth. She tied for fifth at the weather-shortened Northeast Championship last spring after posting an 81. Another solid player for the Big Green is junior Kathy Birchall (Birmingham, Ala.) who had an impact on the lineup right after she set foot on campus. During the fall of 2000 in only her second collegiate event, Birchall fired 74-79-153 to tie for seventh at the Dartmouth Invitational. Senior Erika Fry (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) suffered through an injury-plagued junior year. If she's regained her health, she could return to the form she showed as a freshman when she fired a career-best score of 80 at the Boston College Invitational. Junior Alison Bergen (Lancaster, Pa.) joined the team as a sophomore and has shown flashes, including an 86 to open the 2002 Ivy League Championship. Sophomore Ellen Tani (Sunfish Lake, Minn.) gained varsity experience last year and provides depth to the lineup. Freshman Becky Halliwell (East Hanover, N.J.) could make a name for herself quickly. A multi-sport athlete in high school lettering in field hockey, basketball and softball, Halliwell is also twice a third-team All-State selection on the golf course and was the top qualifier from New Jersey for the 2002 Optimist International Junior Championship. That gives sixth-year coach Kevin Gibson the opportunity to work with a group of six returning letterwinners and a talented freshman. The Big Green opens the 2002-03 season on home turf. The Dartmouth Invitational takes place at the newly-renovated Hanover C.C. on September 14-15. "It should be an exciting year," said Gibson. "If everyone stays healthy, I think we have plenty of potential to stay competitive throughout the season." |
