2002-03 Dartmouth Men's Golf Outlook

In golf parlance, some players are described as "sneaky long." To use a variation, the 2002-03 Dartmouth men's golf team might be considered "sneaky good."

With four freshmen trying to crack the lineup and five veterans returning, the Big Green may be poised to take another step forward in the coming year.

"Our freshmen are relative unknowns as the season starts," said second-year coach Jason Calhoun. "But we have some proven talent returning. We'll have to see how things progress throughout the year, but I'm optimistic about the outlook."

The Dartmouth lineup is headed by senior Jeronimo Esteve (Coral Gables, Fla.). Esteve didn't waste any time making a name for himself as he grabbed All-New England honors during the fall of his freshman year. He repeated that recognition as a sophomore.

Last spring, Esteve was Dartmouth's low finisher at both the San Diego and Yale tournaments, and his best round was a 72 at Del Mar C.C. on the California trip.

Junior Jeremiah Daly (Marion, Mass.) also should be a factor. He had his best varsity showing at the NEIGA Tournament last fall, firing rounds of 76-77. Classmates Greg McSweeney (No. Scituate, Mass.) and Brian Doyle (Queensbury, N.Y.) also have varsity experience under their belts.

Sophomore Stephen Gruber (Long Beach, Calif.) made an impact during last year's season. As a freshman, he shot a 73 on his first collegiate trip around the challenging Yale Golf Course. That helped make him Dartmouth's low finisher at the MacDonald Cup during the fall.

The Class of 2006 includes Kenan Young (Augusta, Ga.), an All-State golfer and the No. 2 player on the 2000 Georgia State championship squad; and Hisaaki Kobayashi (Newington, Conn.), who has racked up numerous All-State and All-Conference honors while playing a full slate of junior PGA and AJGA events. Kobayashi is also the reigning men's club champion at Indian Hill (Conn.) C.C.

Rounding out the group are Mark Christman (Duluth, Ga.), a four-year letterwinner at Chattahoochee (Alpharetta, Ga.) HS; and Tony Papadopoulos (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), a member of the Wando HS team that won the 2002 region championship.

The fall schedule will include trips to Yale, Army, the Toski Invitational and the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship. The Big Green will showcase the newly-renovated Hanover C.C. at the Dartmouth Invitational on September 21-22.
