The Men's Captains Jeronimo Esteve Senior Coral Gables, Fla. Major: Economics One of the most imaginative golfers ever to play at Dartmouth, Jeronimo Esteve enters his senior year after earning All-New England honors as a freshman and sophomore. Esteve has enjoyed a colorful golf career, growing up playing Indian Creek C.C. with Ray Floyd's sons, Ray Jr. and Robert. The two convinced him that he had the game to play Division 1 golf. A veteran of U.S. Amateur qualifying, Esteve also has competed in Monday qualifying for both the Doral Ryder Open and the Honda Classic. His favorite golf course is Royal St. Georges, which will host the 2003 British Open. One of his most memorable golf experiences was at Hanover Country Club when he shot a team-scoring record 64 that included a hole-in-one on No. 14 and an eagle on No. 18. Esteve also had a hole-in-one at the 1999 NCAA regionals held at Glenmaura National in Pennsylvania. As a sophomore, he grabbed runner-up honors with a two-day score of 144 at the Toski Invitational, and he followed that up with another second place effort (69-76) at the NEIGA tournament. Esteve's dream foursome would include Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan, "just to learn the way they play." And Esteve also admires Sam Snead's fluid swing. If a match is on the line, Esteve says there's nothing better than "draining a 10-footer center cut for the match or the win," but he notes that it's all about linking good shots together. He's had the chance to watch some of the best as he's played with Davis Love III, Ray Floyd, Orville Moody and Brad Faxon, among others. Jeremiah Daly Junior Marion, Mass. Major: Government A two-year varsity letterwinner, Jeremiah Daly had his best collegiate finish last fall as a sophomore. At the New England intercollegiates, he fired rounds of 76-77-153, tying for 24th place and helping Dartmouth finish sixth out of 46 teams. As a freshman, he started his collegiate career quickly, shooting 77-73-150 at the Dartmouth Invitational that kicked off the 2000-2001 season. The Daly name is a familiar one in Big Green golf annals. Jeremiah's father, Jerry, graduated from Dartmouth in 1976 after earning All-America recognition four straight years - the only Big Green golfer so honored. An active and talented amateur player and accomplished golf business executive, he died in 2002 after battling cancer. If the match is on the line, Jeremiah says his putter is the club, and touchingly, it's the putter that his father used as a Dartmouth undergraduate. Jeremiah's dream foursome would include father Jerry, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus, and his favorite layouts are his home course - Kittansett - and Winged Foot. Jeremiah and his father combined for a tournament record best ball score of 60 during the qualifying portion of the 1999 Tommy Keane Invitational at Hanover C.C., as the younger Daly shot 66 on his own ball. Jeremiah won the 1998 Eastern Mass High School Championship and was the runner-up at the 1998 Massachusetts Junior Amateur with score of 72-70-73. He attended Bishop Stang HS before graduating from Deerfield Academy in 2000. In 1998, Jeremiah was named both Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic. |
