Joe Henley '79 Men's Golf Captain, 1978 and 1979 Business Executive "When I was a high school senior, I made a decision to attend the college that had the utmost combination of the best academics and the best opportunity for me to play the sport - golf - that I intended to play at the Division 1 level. After meeting the coach at Dartmouth, a very positive experience, and later being accepted to the College, I found that my decision had been made for me to a great extent. "While golf may be thought to be a 'minor' sport by some, for those of us who were committed to representing Dartmouth and improving our golf skills, it was a very rewarding 'major' sport. It was reassuring to see that the academic side of the College understood that, for many students, athletics was an important part of the reason they were at Dartmouth. Professors were aware that Dartmouth athletes had to miss some classes in order to participate successfully in both their sport(s) and their studies, and they were sensitive to the need to schedule make-up tests, etc. "It has been said that Dartmouth graduates spend a lot of their years trying to 'get back into the College.' This is truer than ever with the golf program at Dartmouth, where, through alumni events and the attendant camaraderie, it is common for one to develop a close relationship with someone 20 or more class years in either direction. "And now, with the College's Hanover Country Club having undergone a significant redesign and upgrade, the future of the greatest game at the greatest college is brighter than ever." Tracy Welch '93 Women's Golf Captain, 1992 and 1993 Attorney "For me, Dartmouth offered the perfect balance of athletic achievement and academic excellence. Varsity level golf was combined with an Ivy League education in an idyllic setting. Golf was an integral part of my college experience. I spent four years playing, practicing and competing at Hanover C.C. "However, I chose Dartmouth because the coaches understood that golf should not be the sole focus of one's college experience and that academics come first. Since Dartmouth is first and foremost a college, my classmates and I were prepared for careers and graduate schools by some of the finest professors in the world, not teacher assistants. I had the luxury of getting to know my professors, and even had the good fortune to play golf with several of them. "Above all else, what defined the Dartmouth experience for me and made it so much fun was the camaraderie of the students - I didn't want my four years to end! Happily, I've discovered during the past decade that the enthusiasm for the 'Big Green' extends way beyond the bounds of Hanover, N.H. and is embedded in the hearts and minds of its devoted alumni." |
