Descripción

Authentic art provides a stimulus for writing a short descriptive text which re-incorporates the vocabulary and syntactic structures targeted in the previous exercises.

Description and Goals

The student is now directed to move from the more mechanical stage of the "anticipación" exercises to this more open and creative stage. Here, the student is encouraged to combine aspects of the previous exercises (vocabulary, syntax and themes) to produce a short descriptive text based on authentic pictorial images. These images are generally paintings and/or photographs produced in the same country and during the same time period in which the author wrote, thus enlarging the cultural exposure available to the student. Vocabulary guidelines and grammatical elements are suggested in order to facilitate a link from the pre-reading exercises to the literary text soon to be read. Students can work individually or in pairs/small groups.

Implementation

Wednesday: Paso tres can be assigned Tuesday night for review in class on Wednesday. Depending on the number of students in the class, the assignment can be individual or pair/small group. Suggested ten-minute warm-up or wrap-up activities include: If the classroom is computerized, the images can be brought up, the professor (or students) can read the individual or group descriptions, and the students can simultaneously match the descriptions with the images. A short brainstorming session can then follow which would ask students to describe emotions connected to the style of paintings in the exercise. Cross-cultural connections can be elicited - what is similar / different in art from that time period in our own culture? If the classroom is not computerized, student groups who worked on different images can join together and read their descriptions aloud to each other, paying special attention to pronunciation and intonation. After all students have read their descriptions, a few sentences characterizing similarities and/or differences between the various images can then be brought back to the entire class. Cross- cultural connections can be elicited - what is similar / different in art from that time period in our own culture?
