About the Department

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is one of the language and literature departments which share Dartmouth Hall, the historic architectural center of the campus and the focal point for the study of foreign languages, literatures, and cultures. The teaching staff of the Department represents a broad range of interests and specializations and is dedicated to a high degree of excellence in teaching and scholarship.
In Spanish and Portuguese, the Department offers beginning language through advanced seminars, individual studies and honors programs, and a uniquely varied array of overseas programs. In all its activities, the Department seeks to affirm, within the liberal arts tradition, the importance of Iberian and Latin American culture for a nation which is increasingly aware of the wealth of its own rich Hispanic heritage.
