The central mystery of this hilarious comedy is who is throwing eggs (splat!) at Conchita, a widow struggling in conflictive relationships with her son, her new daughter-in-law, her suitor Tomás, and her neighbors. Conchita is consumed by her fears. Although an old woman tells her that the eggs have great power and she must leave the house and move in with Tomás, Conchita is afraid of being betrayed once more. Witchcraft and superstition add to her depression, and only after she is literally frightened to death does a practitioner of Santería uncover the mystery of the eggs. This film parodies everyone and everything, including filmmaking in general and this work in particular. The fictional story is persistently interrupted by filmmaking pratfalls, it feigns all sorts of technical problems: the director intervenes to address the viewers to explain why an important scene was not shot; a supposedly missing first reel turns up and is shown at the end; the actors are given cues on screen; missing props are tossed in; etc. Source: Lava (Latin America Video Archives)
Lively, if mainly laughless comedy whose gags witlessly remind you "it's only a movie." Someone is throwing eggs at superstitious Concha, and it could be anyone, including her scientist daughter-in-law or the taxi driver with whom Concha has fallen in love. `Plaff!' (the title refers to the splat sound of the eggs) is an ineptly-made, micro-budgeted comedy which makes light of its own ineptitude and low budget – resulting, unfortunately, in only one or two funny gags. The interest is in watching the actors commit to their realistic characters even while facing the camera crew in the mirror, confronting a crew member with a clapboard, or screaming at someone off-camera for a necessary prop; also in seeing how much fun director Tabio dares to poke at Cuba's bureaucracy and general living conditions.
