In 1998-99, Dartmouth hired Centerbrook Architects and Planners to assist the College in a full review of its athletic, recreational, dining and social facilities. In addition, Dartmouth Dining Services participated in a similar review process with Ricca and Associates, a nationally known dining consultant. Students contributed an enormous amount of energy and enthusiasm to the planning process and provided many creative proposals.
The analysis from Centerbrook and Ricca Associates provided the College with a clearer understanding of the maintenance and renovation needs, including those in Alumni Gym and Thayer dining hall. There is a growing demand for more social space controlled by students, a flat floor facility for programming events, and recreational facilities for non-varsity athletes. In response, the Trustees have approved a dining and social facility for the north part of campus and architect selection for that is moving forward. Planning for other recreational, social and dining facilities continues in conjunction with campus academic and financial planning.
A committee of Muslim and Jewish students, together with faculty and staff, developed a plan for halal-kosher dining that will accommodate the needs of the two religious customs and will serve as a resource and gathering place for the entire community. The new facility will open this fall.
