A committee to develop a first-year housing program met during the winter term of 2001 to consider how the College might enhance the first-year experience of Dartmouth students. Assistant Dean of Residential Life Christopher Chambers invited interested members of the community to join four working groups: Community Leadership Roles and Responsibilities; Curricular and Faculty Initiatives; Co-Curricular Initiatives; and Physical Environment. The four working groups met each week during the month of February and the committee plans to submit a report by the end of spring term.
The Office of the Dean of the College made a number of changes to the orientation program for incoming students, including a revamped training program for Undergraduate Advisors to ensure a welcoming and supportive introduction to Dartmouth. Dean of First Year Students Gail Zimmerman reintroduced the common summer reading program, which serves as the topic for a faculty lecture to the incoming class. The Dean of the College also increased the number of sponsored social, cultural and recreational programs during orientation week from 10 to well over 50 programs to provide an array of alternatives to students.
The Office of Residential Life has developed an interim plan, as requested by the Board, to implement a first-year housing program as an option for the Class of 2005. This fall approximately 50 percent of first-year students will be housed in the River Cluster and the Choates and another 10 percent of the class will be housed in the East Wheelock cluster.
