Dean of the College James Larimore and Professor of English Melissa Zeiger co-chair the World Cultures Initiative Committee. Its charge is to "explore ways that both pluralism and unity can be strengthened at Dartmouth, within an environment of mutual respect and understanding." The committee, consisting of 23 students, faculty and administrators, began meeting late in the fall of 2000 and is now reviewing data about Dartmouth, collecting materials from other schools and national foundations and engaging the Dartmouth community in conversation. The committee will submit a preliminary report on its progress to the Provost in late May 2001.
The Dean of the College Office has increased from half- to full-time positions for advisors to Latino/Latina; Asian and Asian American; African American; and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students.
The Committee on Civil Discourse, established in 1997, fosters discussions and considerations of how we, as members of the Dartmouth community, interact with each other through our speech and our actions. The Committee is chaired by Ozzie Harris, Director of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, and is planning a student, faculty and administrator retreat as well as other community meetings. The Committee will be organizing and collaborating with students to create and maintain facilitator programs that encourage student interactions and provocative, but thoughtful, discourse
