Coed, Fraternity and Sorority (CFS) System

The Greek Life Steering Committee, chaired by Acting Assistant Dean of Residential Life Cassie Barnhardt, has developed a set of more rigorous organizational standards for the CFS system (Standards of Excellence). The committee includes CFS students, unaffiliated students, administrators, faculty and CFS corporation and alumni group representatives. The group divided into smaller working groups to focus on six guiding principles: Scholarship; Leadership Development; Service and Philanthropy; Brotherhood and Sisterhood; Inclusivity; and Growing Diversity and Accountability. The committee is in the process of finalizing its report, which outlines specific strategies for using these principles to improve behavior practiced by each CFS organization. The committee plans to submit its report to the Dean of Residential Life at the end of the 2001 spring term.

To help CFS organizations develop sound strategies for improving the quality of their facilities, the College assumed the associated costs for auditing all CFS facilities. The College has hired RISE, a professional fraternity/sorority consultant, to provide strategic planning and leadership development training for all CFS organizations. The Office of Residential Life is also hiring a second full-time professional to work with CFS organizations.

During the summer of 2000, CFS organizations removed tap systems and mass refrigeration units from their facilities.

As directed by the Board of Trustees, beginning in 2001-02, students will become eligible to rush in the winter term of their sophomore year.
