Alcohol

The College Committee on Alcohol and Other Drugs, an ongoing committee that includes students and administrators, has met with various members of the Dartmouth community to gain a greater understanding of the role that alcohol and other drugs play in the lives of our students. Simultaneously, a sub-group of the CCAOD is formulating recommendations regarding when and how student organizations and residential groups may serve alcohol at student social events. They will submit their report by the end of the 2001 spring term.

The Social Norms Campaign, a national program in place at Dartmouth since the fall of 1999, continues to be effective in educating undergraduates regarding actual drinking patterns on campus. This program focuses on changing student misperceptions of campus drinking norms with messages that highlight positive and moderate drinking behavior currently practiced at Dartmouth. Research indicates that clear communication about campus drinking norms is having positive results in reducing excessive drinking. Posters, advertisements, e-mail, presentations and conversations are used to convey messages about actual social norms. Additionally, the staff in Health Resources has improved ways of responding to students with alcohol-related health issues through a team approach that includes greater collaboration between members of the counseling and health education staff, and other colleagues across campus.
