Looking Ahead - 05/01

When they announced the Student Life Initiative in February of 1999, Dartmouth President James Wright and the Board of Trustees challenged the community to explore and develop new ideas for enhancing the College's social and residential life. They shared a vision of a Dartmouth where excellence in the classroom is mirrored by the excellence of the social and residential experience. Two years after their announcement, the reality of this vision is reflected in new programs, spaces, staffing and plans, marking the beginning of a new era in student life.

President Wright said in his inaugural address, "being a student at Dartmouth means being encouraged to take one's self seriously as a young scholar - a person of promise who has a rare and valuable opportunity to learn and grow. It means that here students are not merely passive recipients of information, but are active participants in their own learning process. It means also that the out-of-classroom experience complements and supports the central mission of the College ... we recognize that learning here has never been - nor should it be - limited to the classroom." The Student Life Initiative is the manifestation of the College's commitment to student learning and growth.
