Student Life Initiative: An Update, November 2000

Dartmouth is dedicated to providing undergraduate, graduate, and professional education of the highest quality, and to fostering a love of learning in every member of its community. The quality of the out-of-classroom experience is an essential measure of our success in educating all of our students in the broadest manner possible. Maintaining this commitment to quality involves continual evaluation and improvement. There have been occasions in Dartmouth's history when there has been the opportunity to do even more—to engage in a comprehensive reassessment of how our students live and work, and to rededicate ourselves to providing a residential and social experience that complements and reinforces the excellence of our academic offerings. Such an opportunity is at hand.

In February 1999 Dartmouth President James Wright and the Board of Trustees launched the Student Life Initiative — a challenge to the community to explore and develop new ideas for enhancing the College's residential and social life.

In calling for a bold reimagining of the campus environment, President Wright and the Board expressed their determination to invest significant resources to implement the program of improvements that will eventually emerge from these discussions. "Dartmouth has long taken pride in the sense of community that draws in and touches those of us who are privileged to study, to teach, and to work here," said President Wright. "What we are about to undertake must strengthen . . . that special feeling."
