Memorandum from William H. King, Jr. Chairman of the Board of Trustees

November 4, 1999

To: Members of the Dartmouth Community

I write to advise you that the Committee on the Student Life Initiative is nearing the end of its deliberations on improving the residential and social experience at Dartmouth. Co-chairs Susan Dentzer and Peter Fahey have informed me that they expect their report will be ready for release to the Dartmouth community the week of January 10, 2000. It was originally anticipated that the report would be distributed before the end of fall term, but that goal has proven to be too ambitious.

Over the course of six months of diligent work, the Committee has taken advantage of every opportunity to hear the views of students, alumni, faculty and others who care about the College. We on the Board of Trustees are very pleased with the Committee's progress and have encouraged it to take the necessary time to refine its recommendations and prepare its report. The Board is grateful for the effort that so many have invested in this initiative.

Once the report has been distributed, there will be ample opportunity for discussion before the Board makes any decisions regarding the Committee's recommendations. Everyone's ideas and suggestions will be welcome as we work together to ensure that the Dartmouth experience is a rich and rewarding one for every member of this community.
