Report of the Greek Life Steering Committee

November 19, 2001

Re: Report of the Working Group
"Additions or Deletions for Greek Life Action Plans"

The working group members took the charge seriously, met and worked through the eight items with an open and full discussion of each item. The active and candid discussion engaged all those present for the review.

Three items were determined as important to the Action Plans and three items were felt to be impractical and/or invasive while two items were not developed to a stage that they could be added to the Action Plans yet worthy of further study and attention by ORL for review and discussion by CFS in future years.

The final draft was shared with everyone and each member was encouraged to make deletions, revisions, additions to the draft report. Members contributed comments that represent a stronger and clearer report. The group consisted of four students elected from the four CFS councils, two faculty advisors for Greek houses and two assistant deans responsible for fraternity/sorority issues.

We appreciate the opportunity to serve and look forward to a timely response as to the hoped for acceptance of our deliberations.

Sincerely,

  • Brandon Lucas
  • Nina Markey

Delivered November 19, 2001

1.) Parliamentary procedure, such as Robert's Rules of Order. or some variation, should be used at all council meetings. To be effective Sep 2—2001

ADD TO THE ACTION PLANS

Comment: Although this is difficult to enforce as well as evaluate, the concept is a good one. It will require training in order for student leaders to learn how to effectively implement it. The concept should be disseminated to all fraternities and sororities.

2.) Organizations should provide some form of study spaces as well as access to technology.

ADD TO THE ACTION PLANS

Comment: The concept is self-evident and should be a prime issue for the scholarship officer or director. It is not intended as an issue of heavy fund allocation although general resource support would be welcomed.

3.) A 3-year pilot program limited to 3 houses that volunteer or compete for the positions of an in-house UGA, selected by ORL from a slate of 3 house members willing to accept the full duties and responsibilities required of UGA's.

Each one selected would receive the same compensation package as that of any UGA.

ADD TO THE ACTION PLANS as a special option.

Comment: Graduate Advisors or House Directors presented too many pragmatic issues. The introduction of UGA model seemed the most reasonable and the one most likely to be effective.

4.) Organizations and governing councils will work to develop a Faculty Mentor Liaison program.

DELETE- DO NOT ADD TO ACTION PLANS

Comment: Decided interest and acceptance of faculty presence. Suggest that ORL in conjunction with the Dean of the Faculty Office develop a pool of interested faculty as the important first step.

5.) The Dartmouth CFS community will implement a consistent value-based recruitment strategy as a means to cultivate interest among the broadest spectrum of potential members.

DELETE - DO NOT ADD TO ACTION PLANS

Comment: The term "value-based recruitment" is too vague, too all encompassing and subject to misunderstanding with chaotic results. Term needs revision and concept needs further discussion and exploration.

6.) The recruitment process will be collaborative among the councils so as to ensure that all interested students receive an invitation to join one of the CFS organizations.

DELETE - DO NOT ADD TO THE ACTION PLANS

Comment: Faculty departments, student organizations like the D or SHEBA, professors seeking tenure, athletic teams, like sororities and fraternities select their members through a competitive process. Supplemental note: Sororities are already over subscribed and w/o a more equitable number of houses implementation of this idea would have a negative impact.

7.) It is recommended that CFS organizations conduct business in an alcohol free environment.

ADD TO THE ACTION PLANS

Comment: The principle has the support of the committee with the understanding that it will take time and tolerance for the concept to be employed in every organization and at every business meeting.

8.) CFS organizations need to begin offering an informational program to alumni during times of high alumni involvement (Homecoming, Winter Carnival, Green Key, Commencement, Reunions, etc.) to communicate the values, goals, ambitions and Action Plans of the organization.

DELETE - DO NOT ADD TO ACTION PLANS

Comment: Principle is commendable but the wrong time and the wrong venue for communicating organizational values, goals and ambitions.
