Dear Coed, Fraternity, Sorority leaders:
After careful consideration, I have approved the six Guiding Principles, (scholarship, leadership, service/philanthropy, brotherhood/sisterhood, inclusivity, and accountability), that were developed, debated, and adopted unanimously by the Greek Life Steering Committee. These six principles will serve as the defining qualities of the Coed, Fraternity and Sorority (CFS) community at Dartmouth.
To help ensure that organizations are living up in full measure to these guiding principles, individual organizations will submit action plans on an annual basis. The performance of each CFS organization will be assessed through the annual review of progress in implementing these plans. The process for moving the CFS community to an annual Action Plan review process will be incremental and extend over a three year timeline.
For the 2001-2002 academic year, each organization will be responsible for creating a list of priority actions that serves as a guide for an organization's activities. This list of priority actions is to be completed and submitted to the Office of Residential Life (ORL) no later than October 19th. The Office of Residential Life is ready to help each organization develop this priority list.
Beginning in the 2002-2003 academic year, the annual Action Plan review process will replace the Minimum Standards Review process. ORL will work with each organization about what needs to be included in an organization's Action Plan.
This fall marks the third year in the College's recommitment to social and residential life at Dartmouth. I want to recognize and applaud the time and efforts so many of you have contributed in improving the student experience on this campus. I was pleased to see that a Code of Conduct has been established and that each organization has committed itself to upholding its code. Your leadership in creating clear expectations for members will be critical in your ability to move forward with other goals.
Sincerely,
James Larimore
Dean of the College
