The observer stands insidethe building. The building is partly underground and connected to the Hartness House by a tunnel, which contains the small Russell W. Porter museum.
The rotating turret (green) rides on rollers supported by the white concrete building. The telescope tube is stainless steel (a modern replacement) and accomodates a ten-inch achromatic objective.
