Laptops at Dartmouth College

One of the most important belongings you'll own here at Dartmouth is your laptop. Dartmouth recommends two different computers, Apple or Lenovo, and you can choose to either buy your laptop separately or from the college. If you buy from Dartmouth, you have several different computer packages to choose from, along with the option of ordering accessories such as laptop cases as well.

Dartmouth offers two basic laptop packages:

  • Apple MacBook Pro 13” - 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB hard drive, Super Drive, and 3 year warranty
  • Lenovo ThinkPad T420 - Intel Core i7 2620M (2.7 GHz) processor, Intel HD Graphics 3000, 4GB RAM, 320 GB hard drive, DVD burner, and 4 year warranty Both of these computers have their advantages, and would be good choices for the school year.

Besides the above options, Dartmouth also has two high-end laptop packages:

  • Apple MacBook Pro 15" - 2.0 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive, Super Drive, and 3 year warranty
  • Lenovo ThinkPad T410 - Intel Core i7 2620M (2.7 GHz) processor, NVIDIA NVS 4200M Optimus Graphics, 8GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive, super drive, and 4 year warranty
If you decide to purchase a high-end package and are receiving financial aid, keep in mind that Dartmouth covers up to the cost of only the basic laptop packages.

The nice thing about buying one of the recommended models is that you can take them to Computing Services for help with configurations and repairs.

If you choose not to buy a computer from the college, that's fine. Just remember that the operating systems Dartmouth supports are Mac OS X from Apple and Windows 7 Professional edition and Windows XP Professional from Microsoft. If you do not have one of these systems, you can purchase the upgrade through the College.

A lot of you may be wondering which computer is the best choice. While it is certainly true that many students on campus have Mac laptops, that shouldn't influence your decision on which laptop to pick. Choose the one you're most comfortable with, and soon enough, you'll be sitting in first floor Baker sipping cappuccinos and procrastinating like a pro.
