ARTSTOR  is a database of more than 300,000 images from different times, cultures, and disciplines.  The combination of images, data, and texts provides comprehensive art-related teaching, learning, and researching capabilities. Images can be viewed and analyzed through features such as zooming and panning.

Searching

To begin searching ARTstor collections, click on  on the right side of the screen.

To access all of the features available to you, it is best to create a login, with your Dartmouth email, and any password you choose.  This will allow you to save and annotate images in folders on ARTstor.

The main search box is a simple, Google style search.

Search Functions: Keyword Search Slide

Advanced Search options are also available from the menu bar, to help refine your searches.

Some specialized searches include:

IAP, for images available for publication

QTVR, for images with QuickTime movies attached

Also of note, are Images tagged with little boxes underneath, to indicate the best version out of multiple views of one work of art.

Saving & Sharing Images

Viewing Tools: Thumbnail Page Slide

Viewing Tools: Image Viewer Slide

Images can be saved directly to your document or desktop. Images can be saved to folders created in ARTstor, and can be viewed with the downloadable Offline Image Viewer.

Work Folders: Saving A Group Slide

When viewing a group of images you have saved, you can choose to display an URL for this group, which can then be shared with students and colleagues.  You can also add your personal notes about these images, viewable only by you within this folder.

ARTstor Images can be added to courseware, such as Blackboard, by linking the image URL, found in the properties information.  Click on the text underneath the thumbnail image, to see the file properties information.  Detailed instructions for this are available at, http://www.artstor.org/using-artstor/u-pdf/quick-guide-courseware.pdf .

More ARTstor Tools

ARTstor images can also be imported into presentation software, such as PowerPoint, or utilized with ARTstor’s Offline Image Viewer (OIV).  The Offline Image Viewer allows you to organize a presentation like PowerPoint, but has the added features of zooming in and out of the images.  You can also import PowerPoint presentations into the OIV, and add non ARTstor images and text.

To download the OIV, login into ARTstor, and choose Download Offline Viewer, from the Tools drop down menu. Detailed instructions for using the OIV can found at, http://www.artstor.org/using-artstor/u-pdf/oiv-3-getting-started.pdf .
