1.
Ramayana and Gita
Lecture Video Sessions
Every Sunday, meet at 6:00pm at Moore B03
6:00 — 6:10pm: Prayer (in Moore B03)
At 6:10pm, those interested in the Ramayana will leave for Sudikoff 115
6:10 — 7:00pm (Moore B
03): Bhagavat Gita video lecture & discussion
6:10 — 7:00pm (Sudikoff
115): Ramayana video
Both sessions end
promptly at 7:00pm
If you don't know where
the Moore building is, please look it up on the interactive Dartmouth map
at:
http://www.dartmouth.edu/~rc/campusmap/
(This is the tall
Psychology building on Maynard Street, close to the intersection of North
Main Street and Maynard Street. The
room B03 is a very nice, smart classroom in the basement level of Moore.)
Additional
Information for new attendees:
As you can see, there are two parallel
sessions, one session for watching Swami Chinmayananda's lectures on
Bhagawat Gita and the other session for watching Ramayana on DVD (which was
directed by Ramanand Sagar and shown on the Indian Doordarshan many years
ago). The room in which Ramayana
will be viewed has restricted access.
So all of us will meet in Moore B03 at 6:00pm, REGARDLESS of which
session we are interested in. After
the prayer, at 6:10pm, a section of us interested in the Ramayana will walk
over to Sudikoff 115. Again, since
Sudikoff is a locked building, it is important that you arrive at Moore B03
promptly at 6:00pm.
About
Ramayana
The Ramayana and the Mahabharata are the two
great Indian epics. For thousands of
years, Indians have turned to the Ramayana for guidance on how to lead an ideal
life. The epic has greatly inspired
Indian art, music, dance, literature, philosophy, spirituality and the way
of life. Innumerable movies and
plays have been produced in India on different parts of Ramayana. Over 15 years ago, Indian TV (Doordarshan)
produced a serial that covered the whole epic. This serial was directed by Ramanand
Sagar and was extremely well received by the people. We will view this serial over the next
many weeks. The serial was made in
Hindi, but the DVD we watch has English subtitles. So language should not be a barrier.
2.
Meditation Sessions
Every Tuesday and
Thursday mornings, meet at 9:00 am at Rollins Chapel
9:00 — 9:05am Prayer and Mantras
9:05 — 9:20am Meditation in Silence
9:20 — 9:30am Discussion
Each session ends
promptly at 9:30am
If you don't know where
Rollins Chapel is, please look it up on the interactive Dartmouth map at:
http://www.dartmouth.edu/~rc/campusmap/
Additional
Information for new attendees:
The meditation sessions are purposely kept
brief so that beginners may feel at ease. The first five minutes are spent
chanting a mantra or prayer to create a spiritual atmosphere and mindset.
We then meditate for the following 15 minutes in silence. Following the
meditation, ten minutes shall be spent discussing and talking about our
experiences in meditation, addressing problems, concerns and general views
on how to focus our minds and meditate more effectively. The whole session
will not take more than half an hour.
