Statement from the Proctor

Dartmouth College has enjoyed a relatively safe and secure environment throughout its existence. With in this small, liberal arts institution, students, faculty, and administrators enjoy daily positive interactions within a rural, tightly-knit community setting. As a service-oriented division of the Dean of the College office, Safety and Security has maintained the goal of serving the needs of the college community and ensuring everyone's safety, while exerting considerable effort in continuing to positively contribute to Dartmouth's prized sense of community.

As a relatively small department that is comprised of 34 employees, members function in essentially 4 roles: Security Officers, Night Security Guards, Dispatch Personnel, and Student employees. The role of the department is to protect life and property, preserve peace, recover lost/stolen property, perform support services, maintain a sense of community security and confidence, and ensure compliance with all college rules and regulations.

Pursuant to the goals of improvements in investigation and recovery, crime prevention, and positive community interaction, we are continually progressing in the development and improvement of such programs as Rape Aggression Defense, Violence in the Workplace, the Community Relations Board, and the Blitz Bulletin incident log.

In maintaining our principal aim of service to the community, our message is one of a team concept. Realizing that ours is a singular but progressive role in the college community, we want to communicate that it is important for us to have your understanding, cooperation and assistance in order to better serve you.

Sincerely,

Proctor Harry Kinne
