Description

The James B. Reynolds Scholarships for Foreign Study were established in 1949 by gifts in the will of James B. Reynolds, class of 1890. Awards are made annually to Dartmouth seniors or recent graduates.  Awards are for post-graduate study or projects only.  Applications for projects or study already completed will not be considered.  Reynolds Scholars may study in any field in any foreign country, usually in affiliation with a recognized educational institution and in conformity with a definite program of study or research approved by the Committee on Graduate Fellowships. Study and projects should be a full academic year (minimum of 9 months). The award is for one year only and is not renewable.  Stipend: approx $20,000. Students are responsible for arranging their own programs and/or gaining admissions to the universities of their choice. Applications to European universities, especially British universities, should be made fall term. Application deadline: February 15, 2012.

Guidelines

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have made application for first citizenship papers in the U.S.  Scholarships will not be granted for postdoctoral study.  Graduating seniors and recent alumni/ae are eligible for this award; preference will be given to applicants up to five years beyond graduation. Requests for support of dissertation research for U.S. graduate programs will not usually be considered.

Applications

A complete application file contains the following:
  1. Application Form (Completed online)
  2. Project or Study Proposal (max. 1000 words)- Email to Scholarship.Advising@Dartmouth.edu as an attachment.
  3. Dartmouth Transcript Release Form: This will allow Scholarship Advising to request your Dartmouth Transcript from the Registrar's Office in a timely fashion. Please submit by MAIL or FAX (see form for information).
  4. Transcripts (other institutions): Please request official copies of any other non-Dartmouth transcripts to be sent to: Scholarship Advising, 6201 Parker House, Room 101, Hanover, NH 03755
  5. Two Letters of Recommendation: Both letters should be from Dartmouth instructors who know your work well. Please provide each recommender a Recommendation Request Form and a copy of your proposal.

Letters of Recommendation

Both letters of recommendation must be from faculty members that assess the nominee's intellectual curiosity, character, and potential for advanced graduate study or independent research.  Letters should be sent by email (preferred) to Scholarship Advising, or by hard copy to: Scholarship Advising, 6201 Parker House, Room 101, Hanover, NH 03755 or HB 6201.

Final Application Submission

The application must be saved to your desktop and opened using Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) before completing.  Please complete in Adobe Reader and email to Scholarship.Advising@Dartmouth.edu with your proposal as an attachment.  Please also hand in the entire printed and signed application to Scholarship Advising, 6201 Parker House, Room 101, Hanover, NH  03755 or HB 6201.
