In October 2000, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation of Seattle, WA, announce a donation to the University of Cambridge as an endowment for the Gates Cambridge Trust. The purpose of the Trust is to award scholarships to enable outstanding young men and women from outside the United Kingdom to study as graduate students at the University of Cambridge. The Trustees award scholarships on the basis of a person’s intellectual ability, capacity for leadership, and desire to use their knowledge to contribute to the well-being of society. All fields of study are welcome. The Trust expects to elect around 110 new Scholars annually, of whom about 45 will be students who are permanently resident in the United States. All non-UK citizens are eligible to apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarships.
To be eligible for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship the applicant must:
Research leading to the PhD degree
One-year post-graduate courses (e.g. MPhil, LLM, Diploma, MBA, etc)
2 year MSC degree
Second Bachelor degree as an Affiliated Student
MBBChir Clinical Studies
Applicants do NOT need to be nominated by Dartmouth, and should apply directly to the Gates Cambridge Trust for the Scholarship as well as applying to the University of Cambridge for graduate admission.
Applicants from the USA for entry in October 2010 must apply using Cambridge University's Board of Graduate Scholars GRADSAF form, available to download as a PDF or online (£25). The deadline for receipt of the paper application is October 15, 2009; online application 2 weeks prior. You are advised to submit your application at least a month in advance of the deadline. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview in Annapolis, MD, in early February 2010.
For applicants from countries other than the USA (and American students currently studying abroad), there are various deadlines later in the year. Applicants should consult the websites listed below for further information. Shortlisted candidates in this category will be interviewed in April/May 2009 either in person or by telephone.
Application consists of 1-3 copies of the following materials:
1. GRADSAF form (including photograph)
2. Personal Statement (500 words)
3. Personal Data Sheet
4. Three Letters of Recommendation (2 academic, 1 personal reference)
5. Official Transcript
6. Supplementary materials depending on proposed course of study

The 3 Letters of Recommendation should be collected by the applicant in sealed envelopes. Three copies of the academic letters of recommendation and one copy of the personal letter of recommendation must be given to the applicant in sealed envelopes and included with application packet. Detailed instructions on the letters of recommendation are included in the Graduate Studies Prospectus.
You are responsible for submitting your application and supporting materials by the Gates Cambridge Scholarship and University of Cambridge deadline (October 15, 2009 for US citizens, later for others)
Finalists will be interviewed in Annapolis, MD in early February 2010.
