Gavin Henning, Ph.D.

Gavin Henning is the Director of Student Affairs Planning, Evaluation, and Research at Dartmouth College. In this current position, he supports student learning and development by initiating division-wide assessment efforts and supporting assessment projects within individual departments. Along with student affairs assessment, Gavin has experience in residential life, judicial affairs, and institutional research and currently serves as chair of the ACPA Commission for Assessment and Evaluation. Gavin’s work has been published in professional journals.

As a contributing author of the ACPA Assessment Skills and Knowledge (ASK) Standards, a consultant, and presenter at regional and national conferences, Gavin attempts to empower and enable student affairs educators to engage in assessment on their own campuses and in their own departments.

Gavin holds a B.S. in Psychology and Sociology from Michigan State University, an M.A. in college and university administration from Michigan State University, an M.A. in sociology from the University of New Hampshire, and a Ph.D. in education policy and leadership from the University of New Hampshire.

Specific professional interests include student learning assessment, higher education policy, and student conduct. Of particular interest is the relationship between students, parents, and colleges.
