Many student organizations have College recognition. This status,
achieved by a formal process provides many benefits to organizations and also
has corresponding responsibilities. To be clear, student organizations either
are, or are not, recognized. There is no such status as "sort of
recognized." The privilege of recognition is not permanent and must be
confirmed annually via a departmental re-recognition process. For COSO groups
the annual re-recognition is in the Fall term.
To gain COSO recognition for your organization, you need to prepare a petition for recognition and sample
constitution, which you should amend as appropriate for the organization in
question. Included with this material should be a Statement of Purpose
for your organization, and the name and signature of the advisor (required of
all recognized organizations). These should be submitted to the Collis Center
& Student Activities office, room 303 Collis.
COSO meets every Wednesday afternoon, and will consider all recognitions on
the 1st Wednesday of the month ONLY. Recognitions must be
submitted by noon the previous Friday of the 1st Wednesday of the month. Your
organization will be invited to attend the meeting to discuss the organization
and answer questions the committee might have. The Advisor and seven
members of the organization are required to attend this meeting.
After the meeting, you will be notified of COSO's decision about
recognition. It's possible that COSO might want you to make a few revisions in
the constitution before recognition is granted. If this is the case, the
required changes will be explained and you will be invited to return with the
revisions.
If you have any questions about the specifics of your constitution or the
recognition process, please contact Eric Ramsey (e-mail),
Associate Director of Collis Center & Student Activities.
