General Topics of Interest for all COSO Organizations

Advisors

Each COSO organization is required to have an advisor who is either an administrator or faculty member at the college. Your advisor can be as involved as much as either that person or the organization wants.

Some advisors attend all meetings and events while others meet only with the group's officers. Either way, the advisor is a tremendous resource. If you need a new advisor or would prefer to change advisors, that's fine.

Be sure to keep Pat Moss (e-mail) up to date on who your advisor is.

Annual Awards

Each May, Student Activities plans an award ceremony for student organizations. This program, which involves cash prizes for organizations, is funded by COSO.

The award categories vary from year to year but the top award, the Milton Sims Kramer Group Award for the best student organization on campus, is a constant. Nominations for the Kramer award may be submitted to the Dean of the College (Web site).

Food and Catering

COSO organizations frequently have food as a part of meetings and events. If you are planning to use a caterer you must choose one from the approved caterers (EventPlanning/Approved_Caterers.html) list to make sure they have the proper insurance. If you will be cooking your own food remember a few basics of safe food handling.

  • Keep hot food Hot and cold food Cold.
  • Wash hands before handling food.
  • Use hot soapy water to wash hands, knives and cutting boards immediately after working with raw meat or poultry.

For more information on food safety, contact Dartmouth Dining Services (DDS) (e-mail).

BlitzMail Accounts, Bulletin Topics and Web Sites

COSO organizations have extensive online resources including BlitzMail accounts, BlitzMail Bulletin topics and web site accounts.

Begin by picking up the form for online resources at the Student Activities Office in 303 Collis. Via that form request a BlitzMail account. When the BlitzMail account is established, you can use it to apply for a BlitzMail Bulletin topic and a web site account.

Note that there is an annual renewal of BlitzMail accounts required by Computing Services and you will receive a notice about it on the birthday of your account. As an organizational leader, it will probably be most convenient for you to have the organizational mail come to your personal account by using the "notify" feature of BlitzMail. If you have questions about how to configure your blitz account to do this contact the Help Desk (Web site).

College Web Calendar

All recognized student organizations are encouraged to post events on the College Web Calendar.

Hinman Mail Boxes

COSO has a file for mail, located in Collis 303.  Please see Kim Hanchett.

If you have any questions please contact Eric Ramsey in the Collis Center & Student Activities Office.
