The Majors of the Class of 2012

Majors in Russian will discover that the September 2010 ORC contains a new set of requirements for the major. These changes affect classes following you, but not your class. There is no change in the language of the minor, or of the Area Studies major and minor. We print below the 2009 language, which continues to apply to you.

In the process of changing the major, however, we have normalized some of the eccentricities in our numbering system. Where changes have been made, the old number is followed by the new number in [bold brackets]. A summary of our courses, with titles and numbers, is posted in the accompanying “Russian Renumbering Info Document.”

The Requirements That Still Govern Your Major

Majors

Two types of majors are available to students. Both require Russian 15 [10] and Russian 31, which can be omitted only by vote of the entire Department.

The Major in Russian.

  • Prerequisite: Russian 27.
  • Requirements: Russian 15 [10], Russian 28 and 29; Russian 31 and 32; and a course which constitutes the culminating experience. (Russian 71, 86, or 87, the Honors Thesis, all may serve as the culminating experience in the Russian major.) In addition to these six core courses, students are required to take four more courses in Russian. Eligible courses may include Russian 23 [an LSA+ course] and up to two courses numbered in the teens [which now includes R12, Ethnicity and Nationalism, formerly R39; and R18, Russian Theater, formerly R38]; the remaining courses must be numbered 35 or higher.
