Russ Hughes: Biographical Information

Born in Denbigh, Wales, in 1946, Russ Hughes received his undergraduate education at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in England, and his Ph.D. at the University of Toronto, Canada, under the guidance of John Powell.  After postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Bristol, England (with Michael Green) and McGill University, Montréal, Canada (with John Harrod), he was fortunate enough to join the Chemistry Department at Dartmouth College, where he is now Frank R. Mori Professor of Chemistry.

His chemical interests include teaching Inorganic, Freshman, Organic, and Organometallic Chemistry, together with research activities in organometallic synthesis, mechanisms of metal-promoted carbon-carbon cleavage and formation reactions, catalytic reactions of unsaturated and strained molecules, coordination stabilization of reactive organic species, fluxional behavior of organometallic molecules, perfluorinated analogues of hydrocarbon organometallics, and transition metal promoted fluorocarbon chemistry.  In 1990 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science by the University of Manchester (England).

On the non-chemical side he maintains an interest in collecting and shooting fine old British shotguns, and in riding his 1992 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
