Roger B. Ulrich, Dartmouth College
Professor of Classics
I joined the Classics Department of Dartmouth College in 1989, after teaching in the Department of Art History at Rice University in Houston, Texas for five years. My courses cover topics dealing with Roman Archaeology, Ancient Technology, and Latin language. Since 1991 I've also led undergraduate programs from Dartmouth for intensive ten-week study terms in Italy, where we focus on Roman sites and museums from Ravenna in the north to the archaeology of Sicily. Areas of particular interest and study include Roman architecture and ancient technology. My recent book, Roman Woodworking, was published in 2006 by Yale University Press. Now a new project explores the feasibility of photographing and projecting stereographic images of archaeological sites for use in the classroom. I am also the co-founder of Viator Seminars LLC, a specialty travel company that organizes customized educational tours in the Mediterranean for adults. In July 2007 I resumed the duties of Chair of the Classics Department.
