Travel accident insurance

The College provides several layers of coverage for business travel accident insurance (accidental death and dismemberment) for faculty and employees of Dartmouth College, provided the trip requires the employee to travel outside of Hanover, NH, or from the employee's residence, if the trip commences from that point.

Business travel insurance takes effect when leaving the city limits of the traveler's place of residence or place of employment (the point from which the trip commences) and continues until the employee returns either at the place of employment or residence, whichever occurs first. Travel to and from work and travel on vacations or leaves of absence are not covered.

The Plan, commonly referred to as "accidental death or dismemberment", provides different benefits levels, depending on the loss or injury, such as loss of life, loss of sight, loss of one or both hands, etc.

The benefits are as follows

All business travel:

$250,000

Scheduled air travel only:

750,000

If travel is charged to J. P. Morgan chase mastercard or charged to a College account number by the College travel office:

500,000

total death benefit:

$1,500,000

Note

  1. Beyond age 70 the benefit level reduces. Please refer to the plan for details.
  2. The beneficiary is the person designated by the employee's group life insurance plan.
  3. Aggregate amount of coverage is $10,000,000 for college faculty and employees traveling as a group.

There is no charge to the employee or the department for this insurance. However, under this insurance there is no coverage for accidents or injuries arising out of 'war risks' while traveling to certain countries. Please see the attached list to determine if your destination is considered a war risk area (Word document). The insurance carrier will consider providing trip specific coverage to these countries if they are provided travel information (name, dates, locations traveling to within country, locations residing while in country, and activities to be undertaken) a minimum of 48 hours prior to departure. It should be noted that if coverage is granted, there will be an additional trip specific premium charge that will be the responsibility of the department sponsoring the travel.

For a more detailed explanation of the business travel accident insurance coverage, a Summary Plan Description can be obtained from Human Resources (603) 646-3588.
