Notes On-Line

To understand the maps, memoranda, and notes cited in this book careful examination is needed: neither Leonardo nor Machiavelli left a record of his own role in the failed project, let alone admitted working with the other. This need not be surprising: few people go out of their way to attract attention to a costly political disaster for which they can be held responsible. As in many a mystery, material evidence must be pieced together and analyzed in detail.

Although all readers deserve to know how to find the basic evidence, the discursive footnotes underlying my analysis--while important for scholars and the especially curious--are too lengthy to publish in print.

This web site contains the full text of the footnotes. The have been broken down into chapters for easy viewing.
