Randall Balmer

Visiting ProfessorBalmer

Randall Balmer has been Professor of American Religious History at Columbia University since earning the Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1985. He is Adjunct Professor of Church History at Union Theological Seminary, and from 2004 until 2008 he was a Visiting Professor at Yale Divinity School. He has taught in the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism; in spring 2009 he was the Alonzo L. McDonald Distinguished Visiting Professor at Emory University.

Professor Balmer, an Episcopal priest, is the author of a dozen books, including, most recently, God in the White House: How Faith Shaped the Presidency from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush. His second book, Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: A Journey into the Evangelical Subculture in America, now in its fourth edition, was made into an award-winning, three-part documentary for PBS. Professor Balmer was nominated for an Emmy for writing and hosting that series. His newest book, The Making of Evangelicalism: From Revivalism to Politics and Beyond, is scheduled for release in February 2010.
