Study Away and Transfer Terms

Dartmouth Sponsored Study Abroad Options

Dartmouth College offers a variety of opportunities for students to study off-campus and earn credit toward their degree. The four main categories of opportunities for off-campus study are Dartmouth Language Study Abroad ("LSA" and "LSA+"); Dartmouth Foreign Study Programs ("FSP") and official  Dartmouth Exchange Programs.

Off-campus programs are considered an important extension of the regular Dartmouth curriculum, offering students opportunities to study other cultures and disciplines in depth as well as to gain new perspectives on our own society.

To learn more about Dartmouth sponsored programs visit the Off-Campus Programs Office.

Non-Dartmouth Sponsored Transfer Terms

All Dartmouth students are permitted to apply the maximum of 4 equivalent credits from non-Dartmouth sponsored programs to their Dartmouth degree. This includes any credit transferred to Dartmouth for college coursework completed prior to enrollment as a first year student.  Guidelines that apply to possible transfer credit follow.

Process and Procedures

The student initiates the process by reviewing the Off-Campus Activities section of the current ORC, attending a group information session and completing the APPLICATION FOR PRIOR APPROVAL OF EXCHANGE/TRANSFER COURSE CREDIT, available by download or at the Registrar’s Office. Students must secure individual course approval from the appropriate Dartmouth academic department or program, and should contact the department/program administrator to identify the correct designate for granting approvals.

The Registrar or designate must also approve all transfer credits, therefore after department/program approval has been granted, students submit the application forms to the Registrar’s Office along with course descriptions, program information including a term calendar, and a printed copy of the degree audit by the sixth week of the term preceding the transfer term (see ORC for due dates). Once approved, the Registrar’s Office will notify the student and change the student’s D Plan to reflect a T for the approved transfer term.

Note: Some Dartmouth academic departments and programs have their own firm deadlines that may be earlier than those in the ORC, so also check individual department and program websites for details on transfer credit.

General Transfer Credit Information

Financial Aid:

  • Depends on the individual student, the type of aid, and the location of the transfer term. Check with a financial aid counselor regarding your situation. You may be asked to provide a copy of your approved forms to the Financial Aid Office.

Courses:

  • Must be an integral part of a liberal arts and sciences undergraduate curriculum
  • They may satisfy distributives, world culture, and, with department/program approval, major and minor requirements.
  • The Dartmouth foreign language requirement may not be satisfied using transfer credit.
  • Course syllabuses are required for department/program review and students must obtain them from the transfer institution.

Grading:

  • ALL courses must be taken for a letter grade (no Pass/Fail or Credit/No Credit options permitted) and a C or higher must be earned in order for credit to transfer.
  • Grades do NOT show on the Dartmouth transcript and are NOT computed into the Dartmouth GPA.

Documentation:

  • Upon completion of transfer courses students must request from the Registrar's Office of the transfer institution that an official transcript be sent directly to the Dartmouth Registrar's Office. Once received the credit will be posted on the Dartmouth transcript and the transfer transcript becomes a part of the student’s file.

Major/Minor:

  • Students should include transfer courses approved to fulfill major or minor requirements on their major/minor cards and update if added after initial filing.
  • Students must file their major cards by the end of their 5th term in residence. If not, holds will be put on their next residence term check-in.
