Course Election Reference Guides
Why have we implemented a new course election system?
- Old technology supported our previous system and appeared to be failing. It was important to improve upon this system which was at risk.
- We were unable to provide automated prerequisite checking with the previous system, something which Faculty requested as a priority.
- The Committee on Student Life (COSL) requested a process for First-year course election that will take one day instead of two so that orientation may be shortened.
- Using newer technology allows for many improvements to the course election process for both students and faculty.
What does the new system offer?
- The Timetable is easier to read, and clearly lists cross-listed courses.
- The priority and section processing for courses with multiple sections and enrollment limits is improved.
- Faculty or their proxies are able to apply permissions/overrides electronically. Students receive email notification and then register for those courses.
- BannerStudent checks prerequisites for those Departments/Programs that opt for it.
- Students are able to register online for all courses and sections if they have met the course requirements.
- Faculty or proxies grant instructor permission prior to student entry into a course.
- Students are prevented from repeating courses, eliminating the problem of students finding out after they have taken the course that they will not receive credit.
- The system improves reporting. Departments and Programs may find this helpful as reports are made available.
