Charge to the Committee on Undergraduate Involvement in Research at Dartmouth

In Preparation for the NEASC Visit
October 24-27, 1999

This committee is charged with conducting a focused self-study as part of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) accreditation review of Dartmouth College scheduled for October 24-27, 1999. The committee is charged with examining the opportunities for research and original scholarship available to undergraduate students.

Among the key issues that the committee should consider are:

  • How many opportunities are there for undergraduates to be involved in original research or scholarship, and how do those opportunities compare with the opportunities at comparable institutions? Should the number of opportunities increase, and if so, how?
  • How can the number of such opportunities be increased within the social sciences and humanities as well as the sciences?
  • What is the quality of the undergraduates' experiences in the opportunities that currently exist, and how might their quality be enhanced?
  • Do such opportunities change the undergraduates' academic experience at Dartmouth, and if so, how? Do they affect students' decisions with regard to graduate study or their choice of professions? How successful are Dartmouth students in obtaining outside fellowships.
  • How might additional research opportunities be created for undergraduates within the three professional schools, and what kinds of collaborations might be facilitated by such cross-school programs?
  • How well are research opportunities integrated into the curriculum and into the students' academic experiences, and how might they be improved?

The committee should maintain communication with the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Dean of the College, and the Provost, who will be responsible for preparing the final NEASC report. The committee is to complete its report for submission to the Office of the Provost by June 1, 1999. It is expected that the committee will meet with the NEASC visiting team in October 1999.
