In Preparation for the NEASC Visit
October 24-27, 1999
This committee is charged with conducting a focused self-study as part of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) accreditation review of Dartmouth College scheduled for October 24-27, 1999. The committee is charged with examining the internationalization of the curriculum, programs, faculty, and students at Dartmouth. As the Planning Steering Committee Report of 1990 stated, "...Dartmouth must increase its attention to globalizing the College, bringing together discrete programs to create an international learning environment."
Among the key issues that the committee should consider are:
- What is the international character of the undergraduate and graduate experiences? What should they be, and how can Dartmouth achieve these goals?
- What are the strengths and weaknesses of Dartmouth's language study abroad (LSA) and foreign study programs (FSP)? How can they be improved and enhanced?
- How does the Dickey Center for International Understanding contribute to internationalism at Dartmouth? Are there ways in which the Center's contribution might be enhanced?
- Are there opportunities for international collaborations involving the undergraduate program and the three professionals schools, or between different academic departments within the Arts and Sciences?
- Should Dartmouth strive to increase the faculty's international scholarship and research? If so, what should our goals be, and how might they be accomplished?
- Should Dartmouth strive to increase the number of international faculty and students on campus? If so, how might these goals be accomplished?
The committee should maintain communication with the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Dean of the College, and the Provost, who will be responsible for preparing the final NEASC report. The committee is to complete its report for submission to the Office of the Provost by June 1, 1999. It is expected that the committee will meet with the NEASC visiting team in October 1999.
