The User Environment

After logging in there is in environment in which you work. Shell variables, screen settings, paths to executables, working directory, commands you issue can all effect the environment
The shell is a command interpeter, a wrapper around UNIX services, shell can also makes things simpler
Shells have internal settings and variables (echo $path)
There are also environment variables (printenv) available to other programs. This is one of the common ways of passing information to programs without typing it explicitly - typically used for configuration settings.
All these things are designed to make life easier
