Dartmouth Editorial Style Guide

Acronyms

On first reference, spell out an acronym unless it is widely known, such as IBM, SAT, or NASA. When you anticipate it being used a second or more times, follow the initial  spelled-out form with the acronym in parentheses; use the acronym for subsequent references. Do not include periods between letters. (Although AP does not follow an organization's full name with an acronym or abbreviation in parentheses, for consistency we include them in subsequent references in our publications.)

  • She was a member of the Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC). The DOC is famous for ...
  • Plurals: IBMs-not IBM's
