Provost Barry P. Scherr

Barry Scherr was appointed Provost in September 2001 after serving a brief term as Associate Provost. Barry is the Mandel Family Professor of Russian at Dartmouth. Prior to joining the Provost's Office, he was the Associate Dean for the Humanities in the Arts and Science. Provost Scherr received his A.B. degree at Harvard University and his A.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago. Barry joined the Dartmouth faculty as an Assistant Professor in 1974, promoted to Associate Professor in 1980 and Professor in 1986. He has chaired both the Department of Russian and the Program in Linguistics and Cognitive Science. Among his many grants and honors, in 1998 he was the recipient of the Joe Malik Award for Outstanding Service to the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages. He served as President of the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages, as an outside reviewer for Russian studies programs at a number of universities, as well as on editorial boards, committees and co-organizer of conferences. His teaching interests include nineteenth and twentieth-century Russian literature, comparative literature, and film. The topics of his several dozen articles include Russian verse theory and early twentieth-century Russian prose; among his books are Russian Poetry: Meter, Rhythm, and Rhyme; Maksim Gorky: Selected Letters, co-edited and co-translated with Andrew Barratt; and Eisenstein at 100: A Reconsideration, co-edited with Al LaValley.
