Our panelists Prof. Elizabeth Smith (Biological Sciences), Prof. Casey Greene (Genetics) and Prof. Robert Cramer (Micro&Immuno) answered general questions on what to expect and what can (or should not) be negotiated during the academic negotiation process.

Workshop took place on Friday, Feb 22 12-1:30 pm in Vail 513. Knowing how to effectively market yourself is an essential skill for success, whether it is to prospective employers or for fellowship or grant applications. This workshop with Prof. Jennifer Loros (Department of Genetics) covered two related topics: 1) Tactics on making a great impression during a job interview 2) The importance of creating and maintaining effective records (such as CV) of your research/academic performance.

"School Science Cafe Info/Training Session"
Oct 31, 2012 at DCAL, 102 Baker Library. School Science Cafes are outreach opportunities for grad students and postdocs working in the "STEM" fields of science, technology, engineering and math to visit a group of middle school students to share their experiences and career path. School cafes are designed to be highly interactive and conversational, and the goal is to engage students in talking about science and in considering STEM careers. This session covered the goals and expectations for School Cafes, provided tips on interacting with middle school students, and included some activities to help you explore your skills in communicating with a young audience about your work.

"Writing Mentored NIH Career (K awards) for early stage investigators"
July 24th at DHMC Auditorium G, Rubin level 4. NIH Career Development Awards (K awards) are among the most successful NIH programs and have helped launched the careers of many young investigators. The NIH-wide success rates for K awards are good, yet investigators often don't understand which award is right for them and what's expected of them to secure an award. In this 4-hour seminar, information was given by Dr. Jack Hoopes (served on various NIH Peer Review Panels for K awards) about NIH Mentored K Awards, details of award types, content, and strategies for writing a highly competitive application. This seminar provided invaluable advise for early-stage or new investigators interested in a research career. This seminar was presented by Dr. Christopher Dant at the NCCC and SYNERGY/TDI.

June 26th 2012 at Moore Hall, room B03. The Graduate Consulting Club set up a panel of consulting professionals with PhD background. Participants learnt more about:
- How consulting experience enhances your career path
- What a PhD consultant does
- How to get into consulting as a PhD graduate
Format was a ten-minute intro to the GCC followed by a fifty minute panel discussion.

or industrial setting? Do you wish to have some insight into how to push the members of your team to be the most productive that they could be while at the same time
promoting a fun working environment? DCPDA sponsored a workshop on managing lab personnel, with these distinguished panelists: Duane Compton (Dept. of Biochemistry), Leslie Henderson (Depts. of Physiology& Neurobiology and of Biochemisty) and Bryan Luikart (Dept. of Physiology& Neurobiology) who talked about their past experiences relating to the management of lab personnel.

"Spring Salsa Fest"
Sunday May 13th at the D.O.C. House. Catered by Gusanoz Mexican restaurant, with beer, wine and soft drinks provided by DCPDA. Also, there were two pinatas and other games too! There was also a Salsa competition:
Salsa 1:
People made their favorite salsa recipe and everyone attending were able to taste it and vote for the best salsa recipe. The first prize was a $30 gift certificate and the second a $20 gift certificate from Gusanoz mexican restaurant.
Salsa 2:
There was a free salsa class in which people learnt the basics of salsa Cuban style.

"Workshop: Landing Your Academic Dream Job"
April 3rd, 2012. Lola Thompson, a current math PhD student went on over 30 academic job interviews! Her hard work paid off and she was offered both her "dream" tenure-track job at Oberlin College and her "dream" research postdoc (an NSF VIGRE postdoc at the University of Georgia). She offered her perspective on both types of searches. Joining her was Jennifer Taylor, a PhD chemistry student, who through networking obtained the job she wanted with one interview. She will be working as an IRTA research fellow at the NIH, in the protein-DNA crystallography lab of Fred Dyda.

March 20th, 2012 at DHMC (Aud G) at 5pm. The Dartmouth Clinical Trials Office in collaboration with the Dartmouth College PostDoctoral Association (DCPDA) are hosted an exciting presentation by Dr. Vijay Govindarajan: "Strategy is Innovation". Dr. Vijay Govindarajan is widely regarded as one of the world's leading experts on strategy and innovation. He is the Earl C. Daum 1924 Professor of International Business at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. Recently, Prof. Govindarajan Ranked as Number 3 Management Thinker in the World and won the Breakthrough Idea Award for the $300 House.

"2011 Annual Research Symposium"
On December 12th at the Top of the Hop. This was the time when postdocs showed to each other, faculty and the broader Dartmouth community the great work done here at Dartmouth (Poster presentations) and also show back our appreciation to our mentors (Mentor Award).
The winners of the Mentor award were Alan Eastman (Senior) and James Moseley (Junior). The goal of this award was to recognize the excellent leadership and support in research.
The winners of the Poster Award were Andrea Corcoran (1st prize), Luca Magnani (2nd prize) and Dhana Nair (3rd prize).

"Workshop: Mock Grant Panel"
- Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 12:00-1:30 pm in Vail 614. Are you planning to write a research grant application? DCPDA offered a "Mock Grant Panel" workshop to provide early stage scientists with an insider's view of the grant revision process in study section. What are some of the does and don'ts in research proposals and what constitutes an outstanding grant application?
Our panelists Prof. Scott Gerber, Prof. George O'Toole and Prof. Bruce Stanton provided answers to these and other questions. Each panelist talked briefly about what they perceive as valuable advice for young scientists who are writing a research grant application, and this was followed by a Q&A session.

"Workshop: Presentation Coaching"
- June 23rd, 2011. Do you tend to feel nervous about giving a presentation for a seminar/conference or would you like to improve your general presentation skills?
DCPDA offered a workshop with presentation coach Elizabeth Appleby. Coming from an acting background, Elizabeth Appleby is experienced in coaching people with stage fright and provides advice and exercises that help overcome presentation anxiety. In addition, by focusing on verbal and non-verbal cues rather than the content of a presentation, she can give advice on how to improve the delivery aspects of your presentation.

"Biochemistry Postdoc Seminar Series 2010/2011"
- Having taken over from Chris Stroupe, Katja Koeppen is now organizing the Biochemistry Department's Postdoc Seminar Series. The seminars will take place on alternate Fridays.
Presenting your work in this informal and congenial setting is a low stress way to synthesize your ideas and get friendly feedback from your peers.
It is rewarding, and it is also a nice way to network with other Dartmouth Postdocs.
These Seminar Series take place every year. Please notify new Postdocs in your lab who might not be on the mailing list and encourage them to attend.

A personality test will be given to interested postdocs to determine their type. The test will be given out before hand and the two hour session is to score and interpret the test results. Descriptions of the personality types and possible career choices/approaches will also be discussed.

"Cover Home Repair Project"
- June 13th and 14th, 2009. Cover is a local non-profit organization whose mission is to build community and foster hope through cooperation and fellowship among all home repair and reuse participants. The project involved working together with two low income families in Canaan, building entryway steps, repairing a rotted portion of flooring, and applying a protective coating on a roof to make both homes safer and more inhabitable.
